The project was conceived by Gjoril Songvoll, director of the Oslo Opera Festival, with the aim of staging the opera in 2020 to mark the 125th anniversary of her birth. Playwright and director Einar Bjorge, who wrote the play *Flagstad—Triumph and Tragedy*, was commissioned to write the libretto, and Ketil Bjornstad (1952–), a jazz pianist and composer known for works such as *The Song of the Whale* (Grappa GRCD4328) and *The Song of Belonging* (GRCD4517), was commissioned to compose the music.\n\n“In late fall of 1962, in a hospital room in Oslo. Flaggstad, receiving palliative care for terminal cancer, waits alongside a devoted young nurse for a visit from her friend, the producer and actor Bernard Miles. Amid the flashbacks induced by morphine, she recalls her second husband, Henry Johansen; the fact that he was a member of a fascist party during World War II, when Norway was occupied by Nazi Germany; and the unjust treatment she suffered as a result after the war. Her troubled relationship with her daughter, Else. The glorious days when she sang on the Met stage. Bernard, who supported her and her family during difficult times, arrives. Memories of happiness. After he left, Flagstad was ready to embark on her final journey.”\n\nBjörnsta, who was tackling an opera in the “classical music format” for the first time, created a cohesive chamber opera using melodies and rhythms that range from joyful to sentimental.
