The *Violin Sonata* by Ilgens-Jensen—one of the leading Norwegian composers of the 20th century, often described as a “Romantic Neoclassicist” or a “Neoclassical Romantic”—is believed to have been composed during his youth, around 1913. Unlike his more modern-sounding works—such as the *Passacaglia* for orchestra and the dramatic symphony *Homecoming*—which elevated Ilgens-Jensen’s reputation, this music reveals influences from Grieg, Brahms, Saint-Saëns, and—above all—Reger, with whom he reportedly enjoyed performing. Halvorsen’s *Capriccio* is a “fantasy” characterized by virtuosic sections that embody the spirit of the Norwegian dance “Halling.” The score for the original version for violin and orchestra has been lost; the version for violin and piano, published in Copenhagen in 1897, was dedicated to his friend Henri Martot. Sinding’s suite for solo violin, known for its late-Romantic style, is a work presumed to have been composed around 1918, taking J. S. Bach’s unaccompanied violin works as a model for its “form.” It was dedicated to Karl Staube, cantor at St. Thomas Church.
