It’s true that he is a Black man living in Detroit, and the house music he creates—which is how his work is categorized—originated as Black music. But even setting those reasons aside, his sound conveys a far more overwhelming sense of “blackness” than most music labeled as “Black music.” Norma Jean Bell’s sultry saxophone, melancholic piano, boosted kick drums, and influences from gospel, disco, soul, and jazz… these are his signature traits, evident in his past work as well. While this fourth album remains fundamentally consistent with his previous work, it also incorporates cut-up techniques and, unusually, some acid-infused sounds in certain tracks. Above all, however, what makes it truly captivating is how his rhythms have deepened even further than before. The essence of “blackness” as embodied by a grumpy man—it’s right here.
bounce (C) Shin Takeda

Tracklisting:

1.Entrance 2 the Garden
2.People
3.Backagainforthefirsttime?
4.LIVEINLA 1998
5.P.B.C.
6.Shine
7.Yesterdays Party Watta Bout It
8.Silence in the Secret Garden
9.On My Way Home
10.Sweet Yesterday - (featuring Pitch Black City)
