He grew up in a musical family: his father Erkki Pohjola was the conductor of the Tapiola Choir, his brother Olli was a flutist, and Matti was a cellist. Lysa, Paavo, and Ensti, who recorded Toivo Cura's \"Piano Trio\" (BIS-56), are his aunts and uncles. He enrolled at the Sibelius Academy. He studied with Erkki Jokinen, whose style emphasized harmony, tone, and texture, and the \"pious modernist\" Paavo Heininen. He gradually shifted from the modernist style to one that sought transparency of texture and freedom of expressive language. In his early years, he worked on small-scale works for solo and chamber music, and after a transition period during which he wrote \"Valet\" (1994) and \"Game Over\" (1996), he began composing large-scale orchestral works. The string quartet is one of his most important genres. String quartets are one of his most important genres: \"The unlimited tonal richness of the strings allows for all kinds of expression\" (Seppo Pohjola). Beginning with \"No. 1\" in 1991, which was described as \"Xenakisian in its coarseness and bright sound space, reminiscent of Ligeti,\" nine pieces were written through 2022. Discs of Nos. 1-4 were recorded by the Kamus Quartet and are now available (ABCD-334). The New Helsinki Quartet performs three relatively new pieces on this album: the 2018 \"String Quartet No. 5,\" a \"less than pleasant\" ( Pohjola) piece, premiered by the Camus Quartet in Espoo on December 17, 2018. No. 6 was composed between March and April 2021. It is a music of \"Sturm und Drang\" and the \"fleeting beauty of life\" against a backdrop of various emotions, such as \"the melancholy of spring... the anxiety of old age. Three Finnish folk songs are quoted. The \"serious and weighty\" \"No. 7\" was composed in June-July of the same year and dedicated to Mrs. Sanna.
