Commissioned by the Kaustinen Cultural Committee to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the publication of the *Kalevala*, Nordgren drew on the stories of creation and the liberation of the sun—as depicted in the *Kalevala*—to compose a work consisting of five sections: “Introduction,” “The Birds of Night and Day,” “The Banishment of the Moon-Eater,” “Deep in Manara, the Underworld, Where the Forces of Evil Hide the Light,” and “The Liberation of the Sun, Moon, and Stars.” The orchestration is highly original. The orchestra features two string quintets, a woodwind quintet, two percussion sections, a harpsichord, and a piano, along with a children’s choir and a mixed choir, as well as soprano and tenor soloists. Furthermore, in search of the ancient sounds and colors of Finland, the piece incorporates five 5-string kanteles, three 36-string kanteles, two goat horn flutes, reed flutes, shepherd’s flutes, a humming board, a percussion board, a shaman drum, and a yo-hikko (a 2–4-string bowed lyre). It is said that the use of traditional Finnish instruments was intended as a protest against modern society’s specialization in technology and against contemporary music that has become overly technical and academic. Choral and solo vocals were added to “Birds of Night and Day” and “The Liberation of the Sun, Moon, and Stars,” singing original lyrics not based on the *Kalevala*. The premiere took place on February 3, 1985, at the Kustinen Chamber Music Week. Jorma Panula conducted the Kokkola Symphony Orchestra and an ensemble of musicians from Kustinen. The “Interlude—Cosmic Dance of the Celestial Bodies,” for tenor, Juhikko, and a sampled tape—which was added as the third movement when this work was performed in 1999—is included as the final track.
