True to form, Yoo-Hoo has a distinctly vintage feel, though pinning down which vintage remains delightfully elusive thanks to the ever-changing mix of surf, blues, funk, disco, and other styles that fuel his music. From the beginning, one thing is clear: Listeners are back in Sakamotos loopy sound-world, populated by breezy flutes, bendy slide guitars, and a double-jointed whimsy that seems effortless. All of these are present on the charming opening track "Dear Grandpa" and on "Ghost Town," a classic example of Sakamotos quixotic pop that features small but enormously colorful flourishes from marimba player Manami Kakudo.
At times, Yoo-Hoo feels like a welcome sequel to Like a Fable, particularly on "Justice," a pastoral showcase for Toru Nishiuchi’s elegant flute work, and "On the Other Side of Time," which builds from a simple 60s soul groove into suave vocal harmonies. Elsewhere, the album reinforces just how creatively restless Sakamoto is. He folds mood kayō -- a mid-20th century form of Japanese pop that blends kayōkyoku with American jazz, Latin rhythms, and Hawaiian influences, into his repertoire easily on "Protect Your Brain" and "Is There a Place for You Here?," a smoky, mysterious standout thats trippier than a lot of music that bills itself as psychedelic. And while "The Clock Began to Move" defines Yoo-Hoos relaxed groove, the moody funk and wild sax stylings of "Numb" are a reminder that Sakamoto can still tear it up whenever he wants. The lunar bounce of the title track brings the albums vividly surreal refuge to a close, but Yoo-Hoo transcends nostalgic escapism. Its lightheartedness feels like an act of bravery, daring listeners to remember that even when it seems unlikely, good times can exist not only in memories, but in whatever comes next. ~ Heather Phares

Tracklisting:

1.Dear Grandpa
2.Is There a Place for You There?
3.Justice
4.Protect Your Brain
5.On the Other Side of Time
6.The Clock Began to Move
7.Numb
8.Why Do This?
9.Ghost Town
10.Yoo-hoo
