Around 1740, he studied violin and composition with Tartini in Padua; after a stay in Amsterdam, he moved to London in 1751 and lived in Cambridge from 1762 until his death in 1799.\nThe musical trend in 18th-century London was Italian music, with Corelli at its pinnacle; the reason the concerto gross by Geminiani and Handel were so popular there was that they were works that carried on Corelli’s style. Following in the footsteps of his predecessors, Hellendaal also published concerto gross.\n\"Six Grand Concertos, Op. 3\" (published in English as \"Concerto Grosso\"), published by Walsh in 1758, is the only surviving orchestral work by Hellendahl. The instrumentation consists solely of a string ensemble, and the concertino features not three players as in the works of his predecessors, but four: two violins, a viola, and a cello. Featuring an overture, a fugue, and dance pieces, this collection is a rich and substantial work that stands on par with the masterpieces of his great predecessors; it captivates the listener with unexpected charm, particularly the poignant intensity of the minor-key pieces.
