Joe Lovano Trio Tapestry

The third album in two years from Trio Tapestry, the 2019 ECM debut of Joe Lovano, one of the best tenor saxophonists of our time! Joe Lovano was recognized by Elvin Jones and moved to New York City in 1976, where he gained critical acclaim playing with the Woody Herman Orchestra, Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Paul Motian Group, and others. He has continued to reign as the king of the modern tenor saxophone, releasing his debut album "Trio Tapestry" on ECM in 2019 with his trio with Marilyn Crispell (p) and Carmen Castaldi (ds), which received rave reviews from various jazz reviews. The trio's second album, "Garden of Expression," was released in 2021, raising the bar even higher and highlighting the intense focus of the recording, establishing their unique fresh and beautiful chamber jazz. Our Daily Bread, the third album in two years, is another work with a spacious lyrical approach and an ever-expanding capacity for deep listening and concentration. In his liner notes, Lovano writes, "This work is propelled by a rhythmic spirit of expression that projects the mystical world of music." He writes. The result is a work of graceful, fluid compositions and floating ballads that truly feel like songs of the soul. "BBC Music Magazine said of Trio Tapestry, "Lovano's themes and harmonies offer a wealth of possibilities. And the trio beautifully deepens the playing, developing melodies and harmonies as well as exploring textures and moods." Marilyn Crispell is the perfect pianist for this music, orchestrating as it develops with a sensitivity to both contemporary chamber music and post-Coltrane improvisation. Drummer Carmen Castaldi, also a friend of Lovano's since her teenage years, colors the music with a poetic touch on the cymbals and, like Joe himself, draws floral sounds from the gongs. In the middle of the program, Lovano's tenor solo on the bluesy "One for Charlie" as a tribute to Charlie Haden is another highlight.
