Leading the charge to breathe new life into RCOLive is Gatti, whose reputation for live performances has been soaring. The highly anticipated program features a collection of works by Berg, a composer he has frequently performed in recent years.\nThe program will feature Beethoven’s “Fate” Symphony, five pieces from Hindemith’s “Exercises for Instrumental Ensembles,” and the “Lulu” Suite. Also on the program were three short pieces with which Gatti has achieved great success in live performances not only with the RCO but also with the Dresden Staatskapelle and the Vienna Philharmonic. Gatti, who is said to “conduct as if singing—or rather, to conduct while actually singing,” truly embodies the spirit of an Italian dandy here. This brings to mind how Abado, another Italian conductor, had long specialized in Berg, but Gatti’s passionate conducting style also reveals an unexpected aptitude for Berg’s music. Furthermore, just as the sound of the Vienna Philharmonic was indispensable to Abbado, Gatti has at his disposal the RCO’s sound, often likened to gold. Berg’s sensual world, brought to life by the RCO—which possesses an indescribable charm in its very tone—is truly exquisite. The soprano in the *Lulu* Suite is Efrati (born 1966), an Israeli singer who has already sung the title role in a complete recording of the original version and has made it her signature role.\nThe excellent chemistry between Gatti—who is currently at the top of his game—and the RCO is immediately apparent upon listening to this album.
