A daring performance of Prokofiev's ambitious work! The Prokofiev concertos by Rohan de Saram, a cellist specializing in contemporary music and a member of the Arditti Quartet, are now available for the first time on CD in high-resolution remastering from live studio recordings made for Dutch radio broadcasts in 1971 and 1972! Prokofiev's ambitious Cello Concerto No. 1, which was so difficult that Rostropovich later advised him to make major changes to it and turn it into a \"symphonic concerto,\" is a powerful work with the solo cello's taut high notes. Rohan de Saram's energetic performance brings the true value of the work to life and is well worth a listen. The Russian-born conductor Fistolari provides the backing. The coupling is chamber music accompanied by Rohan's brother Durvi. The album includes a ballad written when Prokofiev was 21 years old and a sonata written a few years before his death, providing a bird's-eye view of Prokofiev's lifelong cello music.
