The album opens with “The Street Musician” from Enescu’s “Impressions of Childhood,” composed in 1940. With its improvisational melody featuring folk-inspired elements, this piece is a fitting start to the album. This is followed by Poulenc’s Sonata, written in memory of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, and Lily Boulanger’s “Nocturne,” which reflects the painful experiences of war, before moving on to a piece by Hubay, who, like Tomita, was born into a musical family. The carefully curated program—featuring Ravel’s jazz-inspired sonata and concluding with the young Debussy’s masterpiece “Beautiful Twilight”—fully conveys her current state of mind.\n\n[Coco Tomita]\nBorn in Okayama in 2002, she moved to the UK when she was six months old. She began playing the violin at age four and, at age ten, enrolled at the Yehudi Menuhin School as a British Government Scholarship student, studying under Pierre Amoyal and others. In 2020, she became the first Japanese winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in the string category. Currently based in the UK, she is active as a soloist and chamber musician, primarily in Europe.
