It is an ambitious project, as every piece included here is being recorded in this form for the first time.\nThe centerpiece, *Five Mystical Songs*, is recorded in the version for piano and string quintet that the composer himself arranged around 1925. While this is an ideal instrumentation, performance opportunities are rare, making this a truly valuable recording. While early songs based on Christina Rossetti’s poetry have traditionally been recorded primarily for soprano, this album presents them for the first time with male voices, revealing a new charm. Furthermore, Roderick Williams—who also contributed to Vaughan Williams’s collection of folk song arrangements (81 songs in total)—selected eight pieces from that collection and arranged them for string quartet accompaniment. These arrangements, which have been well-received in concert, have been recorded here for the first time. The cantata *Willow-Wood* was premiered in 1903 for voice and piano; although an orchestral version was later created, the composer himself was not satisfied with it, and it did not gain widespread popularity.
