It is also common to find that the instrumentation of his other works changed before they were completed, which may be seen as a reflection of Brahms’s own spirit of inquiry. The Piano Quintet, Op. 34, composed in 1864, was originally conceived as a string quintet (the version included on this CD), but it was discarded because the reception at a trial performance was not favorable. It was later rewritten as a sonata for two pianos, and, with advice from those around him, eventually took on its current form. Here, we present a performance of the discarded string quintet version, reconstructed by cellist Karutunen. It is a performance that aptly traces Brahms’s original vision. The other piece is a version of the Clarinet Quintet in which the clarinet has been replaced by a viola.
