His name appears frequently in accounts of Liszt’s life, and Liszt even dedicated his late-period nocturne “In a Dream” to him. He was also a skilled pianist and appears to have arranged numerous works by Bach, Handel, Buxtehude, and Liszt; however, most of those scores have been lost, making it difficult to grasp the full picture of his work. His arrangements—even when based on orchestral works—were founded on the concept of playing every single note of the original composition on the piano. Naturally, this results in a richer sound and presents extreme technical challenges.
