Originally the LPO was to have given the world premiere of this work, but the performance was postponed due to a pandemic, and the world premiere performance was given by the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra \u0026amp; Chorus in January 2021.Commissioned by the LPO in 2019, the work was composed by Macmillan's Scottish roots and Catholic faith, incorporating Scottish Gaelic lullabies, English poetry, Latin texts, and biblical passages recounting the Nativity. The work is divided into two parts, each with seven movements. Each part has a palindromic structure, beginning and ending with a short orchestral movement. Each soloist sings two arias and a tableau section with the chorus. Various aspects of Christmas are portrayed: a Christmas carol-like melody is heard with an exciting rhythm, children's joy at Christmas is expressed, and the chorus recounts the nativity scene like an evangelist.
