Guided by the belief that “the words of an opera should be such that they cease to live the moment they are separated from the music,” he wrote the libretto himself. Set on the day of the summer solstice, the story follows the protagonists, Mark and Jennifer, as they overcome various difficulties (all of which take place within an illusion) and ultimately return to the real world; dance plays a major role in the work. Above all, the orchestra—which demands both delicacy and virtuosity—shines throughout, magnificently showcasing the LPO’s true strength.\n\nEdward Gardner (Conductor)\nBorn in Gloucester in 1974. He has served as Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra since 2021. He studied at Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music, where he was a student of Colin Metter. He has served as Music Director of the Halle Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Glyndebourne Tour.
