Description:
Ella Fitzgerald began recording for Norman Granz's new Pablo label in 1973, and Tommy Flanagan served as her backup pianist from that time until 1978. This is a live performance from February 1974 in Cologne, Germany, featuring Flanagan, Keeter Betts (b) and Bobby Durham (ds), who, like Flanagan, had worked with Ella for many years, and Joe Pass (g), who had recorded several excellent duets with Ella for Pablo. Ella also sings at her best backed by these musicians. Also, perhaps indicating that Ella's set was part of the J.A.T.P. performance, Roy Eldridge (tp) and Eddie Lockjaw Davis (ts) joined as guests on the last two songs, Roy on both songs and Lockjaw on "Now's The Time," each with a lively and solos.
