Description:
This box contains all the recordings of the "Artemis Quartet", which has always delved into the "power of creating something new" In 1989, four students of the Lübeck College of Music formed a string quartet named the "Artemis Quartet". In 1996, the quartet won the first prize at the 45th Munich International Music Competition, the first time in 25 years since the Tokyo Quartet in 1970. In 1997, the quartet won the first prize at the "Premio Paolo Borciani" International String Quartet Competition in Italy. After winning these two prizes, the quartet made its debut in Europe and toured the United States to great acclaim. The New York Times confirms the reputation of the Berlin-based Artemis Quartet, which, while shuffling members, plays with a sometimes intense passion and "consistently finds a balance between the projection of musical structure and the conveyance of immediacy."This box is a 23 CD collection covering all recordings made by the ensemble between 1996 and 2018. The Artemis Quartet has been active since 1989 and has developed a particularly strong reputation for its central Austro-German repertoire. Beethoven justifiably asserts a strong presence, and the repertoire further extends into Eastern Europe, South America, and even into the 20th century; the two violinists switch between first and second violins depending on the piece, and the quartet performs with a thoroughness that the group had never had before, a "new ability to create," which has always been delineated as diversity. Over the nearly quarter-century period documented in this box, the Artemis Quartet's lineup has changed, but as founder and cellist Eckart Runge explains, "This has brought new inspiration, an opportunity to expand our horizons and introduce fresh ideas We are very proud of the new lineup," he said. The ensemble suffered a tragic loss in 2015 with the untimely death of viola player Friedemann Weigle (brother of conductor Sebastian Weigle).A few days earlier they had completed a recording of Dvorak's lyrical and moving Dvorak String Quartet "America". This box marks the first release of that recording; Eckart Runge, a founding member of the quartet, retired in 2019 and the quartet will be inactive in 2021. This groundbreaking box contains not only the recordings for which Warner Classics currently holds the rights, but also licensed material from Freiburger Musik Forum (ARS MUSICI), the first label to discover the group.
