Founded in 1991, the Praga Label—a subsidiary of Harmonia Mundi France—gained attention for promoting Czech musicians and works through new recordings, including those by the Pražák Quartet, as well as historical recordings such as those from the “Prague Spring” music festival. At a time when CD production in the former Eastern Bloc was sluggish due to the turmoil following the collapse of the former communist bloc, it was a rare label providing Czech music.\nIt was also one of the first to recognize the potential of SACD and earned a reputation for its superior sound quality. It astonished the world by releasing a steady stream of historical recordings, ranging from artists associated with the former Soviet Union—such as Mravinsky and Richter—to figures like Furtwängler and Karajan. However, the label was temporarily discontinued following the death of its founder, Pierre-Émile Barbier, in April 2018.\nRenowned sound engineer Nicolas Bartholomew, in addition to handling many of Savard’s AliaVox recordings, runs his own recording company, Little Tribeca, and is also the head of the Aparte and evidence labels. Intrigued by the Praga catalog, he purchased all 445 masters despite the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and launched the reborn Praga label.\nTo commemorate this, and since this year marks the 30th anniversary of the Praga label’s founding, we are offering a box set of 30 carefully selected titles at a special price. In addition to recordings by the Pražák Quartet and the Kočián Quartet, the collection is packed with legendary performances by Mravinsky, Richter, Kondrashin, Oistrakh, Furtwängler, Markevič, Ansermet, and Michelangeli.
