A viola da gamba virtuoso, composer, and teacher, he published five volumes of viols between 1686 and 1723. Many of his works have a quiet, introspective atmosphere that differs from the courtly pomp and splendor, requiring not only technique but also a high sense of timing, ornamentation, and all other aspects. Jun Sakai, who has been showing increasing promise as a violist in recent years, has begun recording Marre's viol collections. This CD, the first volume of this collection, includes the first volume of Marre's music. Jun Sakai says that because the viola da gamba is played with the strings in direct contact with the bow hairs, what he feels inside his body and what he wants to express comes out in the form of sound in a subtle and unmistakable way. Sakai's sincerity and humanity toward music all crystallize into a beautiful crystallization. The gentle yet dense ensemble with Rousset and Marion Martineau is also an attraction.
