Mozart composed this work at the request of Prince Jiménez of Aragona, but there are no records indicating that it was ever performed. Although it is classified as an oratorio, its style is reminiscent of opera seria; even considering just the opening overture, one cannot help but be amazed anew at Mozart’s prodigious talent in composing such a work at the age of 15. However, the story tells of how the chaste widow Judith infiltrates the enemy camp, lures the enemy general—who has let his guard down due to her beauty and fallen asleep after drinking at a banquet—into a trap, beheads him, and saves the town. This story, a symbol of female chastity and courage, has been widely used and is well-known since the Baroque period. The soprano Amital performs the dazzling arias. Here, Sandrine Piau takes on the role of Amital. The tribal chiefs, Kabri and Karmi, serve as narrators in the story. The role of Giuditta, sung by an alto, is played by the Italian singer Iervolino. She has a rich, full-bodied voice and performs a wide range of works, from Handel to Verdi. The chorus is performed by Accentus.
