Even large concertos were often performed at home or in salons, with chamber music taking the place of orchestral accompaniment. Chopin's concertos are also recorded as having been performed by Chopin himself in chamber music versions at his home and other places, but there is no record of his own arrangements (nor is it known whether Chopin actually wrote the scores for chamber music versions). In this recording, the string part of the orchestra is basically played by the ensemble as it is, and the important parts played by instruments other than strings are basically played by the piano. Especially in the tutti, the piano and string quintet form an extremely dense ensemble, and we are immediately drawn into the world that unfolds from the prelude. The piano is an 1836 Erard, and the string ensemble are all 19th century instruments. It is a delight to listen to this piece while imagining what it must have sounded like in Chopin's salon.
