What is surprising is the second movement Adagio of the Trio (track 3). Ries must have had the happiest memories of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3, since he performed it with great success when he was 19 years old, and Beethoven was overjoyed at the time. This is a beautiful work that projects the image of the second movement of the same piece (Gaspalovich on cello is terrific). Ferdinand Ries, known as a man associated with Beethoven, was in fact a very good composer of early Romantic music, which can be clearly seen in his works for clarinet, which were especially developed during the Romantic period. In particular, the \"Sentimental Sonata for Clarinet and Piano\" is a masterpiece in which the tone of the clarinet is combined with a variety of moving expressions. The performance is by Werfelbergh and his colleagues from the Netherlands, who have been active in introducing unknown works to the public. The Clarinet Sonata, Op. 29 [1809] and the Clarinet Trio, Op. 28 [1810], were presumably composed while he was away from Vienna and in his native Bonn, following Napoleon's bloodless entry into Vienna. On the other hand, in the Sentimental Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, Op.169, although \"Gaudesberg 1814\" is written in the upper right corner of the first page of the autograph, Ries was already living in London at the time, so it seems likely that either the place or the date, or both, were mistakenly entered. The first edition from Peters, published in 1834, added a short introduction to the first movement, and other parts were also rewritten considerably, giving the impression of a more accomplished writing style and a very full finish (the performance on this CD also uses the published score).
