The String Quartet No. 3, composed around the same time, is said to have been his favorite work, in five movements including two scherzos and a short but intense slow movement. The work is a deep descent into darkness, with a sharp, sharp development that is most characteristic of Shostakovich, who finds a scene of relief in the midst of anxiety at the end of the piece. After Stalin's death in 1953, Shostakovich began notating the so-called DSCH, and No. 5 is the first work in which it appears. In No. 7, the composer again becomes the clown, the fool to King Lear in No. 8, a work in which the DSCH is deified. In No. 9, the form is again in five movements, which suits Shostakovich well, and signs of a style toward the refined and austere later period are beginning to appear in the solemn simplicity of the slow music's slow tempo and the crisp exhilaration of the final movement.
