Kerl, on the other hand, was born in Adolf, in southwestern Saxony. He displayed musical talent from an early age. He studied at the Viennese court and appears to have associated with Carissimi and Frescobaldi in Rome. In 1656, he was appointed principal music director to Ferdinand Maria, Elector of Bavaria, and became one of the foremost composers of his time. He is also known for having influenced Handel and J.S.
