However, he had to work during the political unrest that led to the Russian Revolution and communism, and his exile put him in an unfavorable position. This disc is a wonderful new discovery of Glazunov. Orchestral versions of the recorded works exist, but they are not derivative arrangements or reduced versions, and it is not easy to determine which came first. Given Glazunov's talent as a composer, one might misjudge the value of these piano versions, which are little more than black-and-white sketches of colorful originals. However, this cannot be said of this recording, as it also highlights musical details that one might not notice in a sumptuous orchestral performance, and one notices the wide-ranging influence of the pianist's interpretive choices.
