David Fennessy played in rock bands as a teenager and formally began studying music at age 15. After studying at the University of Dublin, Ireland, he went on to study composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with James MacMillan. His rock background has given him a free and experimental bent that is not confined to traditional classical styles. Panopticon\" is an anarchic piece that could be described as a kind of punk or minimal music, in which other instruments are intertwined with the pulse of the Zimbalon from beginning to end. The \"Piano Trio,\" a long, quiet Feldman-esque sound that shelves between conversations between the two composers (as told by the performers) reconstructed from the transcriptions of Cage and Feldman, and \"Hirta Lounds,\" a beautiful piece inspired by the landscape of Hirta, an archipelago in Scotland, are also worth listening to. It is somewhat reminiscent of the experimental works of Gavin Bryars' early years. Recommended for lovers of British experimentalist music.
