In No. 9 in particular, perhaps in order to avoid traditional singing, he invited his former colleagues, the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus, with whom he had collaborated on various modern and contemporary works, and succeeded in creating a free and expressive chorus that was sometimes even wildly expressive.
