The impassioned playing that won the admiration of Rachmaninov during his lifetime returns on SACD. This 1960 recording (originally EMI), made after her earlier mono version had become an international best-seller, is her only stereo account of the concerto. Alongside the original album, this release also includes Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 (recorded 1956). The masters were digitised at 96kHz\/24bit from the original UK tapes, and the SACD and CD layers were each newly mastered separately. A release to keep for good.\n\nLympany was celebrated as a Rachmaninov specialist, and her Piano Concerto No. 2 had an earlier incarnation in a 1954 mono recording for EMI (with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Nicolai Malko) that was also a commercial success. She left a great many recordings for Decca and EMI during the mono era, but her stereo legacy is small: a handful of concertos, solo works by Chopin and others, a few recordings from the 1970s, some short pieces and Debussy from the digital era, and her Erato recordings of the 1990s. This is her only stereo recording of the Second Concerto (the Third exists only in mono), making it a rare document of her art at its finest. The playing is passionate and unfailingly dignified, and on SACD one can sense far more keenly the sheer power of her attack, the care she takes over every detail, and her dialogue with the orchestra behind her. A great recording neglected in its earlier CD incarnations is restored to something close to its original form.\n\nThe three pieces from the 24 Preludes included on the original LP are also here, in their original order. The Prokofiev, made in EMI's very earliest stereo days, has limited channel separation and a centre-weighted sound; we ask for the listener's understanding, as this is characteristic of recordings of the period.\n\nThis reissue includes newly written, detailed notes by Nobuyasu Matsuoka. The SACD layer offers an extended, airy treble, soft nuance, high resolution and a rich sound stage, while the CD layer offers a firm, well-focused sound with real presence.
