Essential listening, and Viennese to the core.\n\n〈Artist profile〉\n● Vienna String Quartet\nFounded in 1964 by four members of the Vienna Philharmonic, led by the orchestra's then concertmaster Werner Hink. Hubert Kroisamer took over the second violin chair in 1977, Fritz Dolezal the cello in 1985 and Hans Peter Ochsenhofer the viola in 1998, and the ensemble continues to this day. Since the violist and cellist of the original line-up had been members of the Vienna Konzerthaus Quartet, the group was regarded as its direct successor and took on the chamber concerts of the Musikverein, among much else. In 1973 it signed a recording contract with RCA, and from its 1974 tour of Japan onwards it extended its concert activity abroad. Its repertoire is wide-ranging: at its heart lie the Viennese Classics – Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert – but it extends to Dvořák, Smetana and Janáček, to the Viennese modernists Zemlinsky, Schoenberg and Webern, and on to Shostakovich and premieres of contemporary works such as those of the Austrian composer Helmut Eder. The quartet has recorded continuously for RCA and Camerata; in Japan its 1982 disc of Schubert's \"Death and the Maiden\" and Quartettsatz was named best chamber music release in the Record Academy Awards sponsored by Ongaku no Tomo Sha. Subsequent recordings – the complete Schubert quartets, the ten great late Mozart quartets, and the clarinet quintets of Mozart, Brahms and Weber with Karl Leister, formerly of the Berlin Philharmonic – have earned high international regard. Since 1985 the players have also formed the string section of the Vienna Octet.
