It features all the pieces performed that day. Oliver Nassen, a specialist in contemporary music who also shared a close personal friendship with Takemitsu, was the ideal choice for this concert. Through his meticulous and delicate interpretation, he vividly brings Takemitsu’s world to life. Twenty years have passed since Toru Takemitsu’s passing. During that time, the landscape of contemporary music has evolved, and many outstanding Japanese composers have emerged. While it is often said that a composer’s works live on forever, in that sense, Toru Takemitsu is still very much alive. Many listeners have developed a distinct, recognizable concept of what constitutes Takemitsu’s music, and his music continues to be sought after to this day. Meanwhile, the performers with whom he shared a close friendship during his lifetime continue to convey the vitality of his music. Peter Serkin, one of the most important figures among them, was originally scheduled to perform at this landmark concert in October 2016. However, when he was forced to cancel due to health reasons, it was Yuji Takahashi—a longtime friend of Takemitsu’s—who stepped in to help. The concert was conducted by Oliver Nassen, who had first heard Takemitsu’s works as a teenager and had since maintained a deep connection with him both as a colleague and a friend. Nassen, who has stated that he was most drawn to “Green” among Takemitsu’s many works, must have felt a particularly strong connection to this concert. How did the sounds of this milestone—marking the 20th anniversary of his passing—resonate with Japanese audiences? We are now releasing a CD featuring the complete program from that concert. It is worth noting that a concert was also held to mark the 10th anniversary of his passing, and the CD titled “The Universe of Toru Takemitsu” was released to great acclaim.
