He enrolled at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing to study composition, and after graduating, he taught there. He spent two years in Japan starting in 1980, studying composition with Joji Yuasa and Shinichiro Ikebe at the Tokyo College of Music. He then moved to Australia, where he studied under Hans-Werner Henze and Oliver Nassen, and that same year won the Koussevitzky Tanglewood Composition Prize.\nYu has composed numerous works for orchestra, solo instruments, choir, theater, opera, and more; in 2008, he was commissioned to compose the music for the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.\nThis piece consists of over 100 variations on the theme of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” Regarding his intent, Yu himself explains as follows:\n“What occurred to me was that it would surely be very helpful if I could use a single theme to illustrate various compositional techniques and styles, demonstrate the numerous ways to vary that theme, and explain how diversity arises from a single source. That is how this collection of piano pieces came to be.
