The definitive edition.\n\nOne of Haitink's signature achievements, and the first complete Shostakovich symphony cycle to be made in the West, this set was very highly regarded on its release. Drawing on two orchestras - the London Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra - and combining the most searching interpretations possible at a time when the Cold War was still in force with DECCA's fine engineering, it realises each work with outstanding insight, and remains one of the greatest achievements in this repertoire by anyone outside the countries directly concerned. Many recordings have appeared since the cycle was completed, but in several of the symphonies none has yet surpassed Haitink's. The London Philharmonic recordings come from the culmination of DECCA's analogue era, while the digital sessions, made in the very earliest days of the format, exploit its qualities to the full; the quality of the DECCA engineering throughout is high, and the set retains a devoted following to this day.\n\nFor this box we have added the Cello Concerto No. 1 with Lynn Harrell, recorded in April 1984, which was missing from the previous Japanese editions of the cycle (issued twice) and from the imported box (which also omitted two orchestral works) - all of which ran to eleven discs - without increasing the number of discs. Every one of the twenty Shostakovich works Haitink recorded for DECCA is now included. As for price: the first Japanese edition of the cycle cost over ¥36,000 and the 2005 reissue a little over ¥16,000, whereas this eleven-disc set is offered at ¥6,857 plus tax. In addition, the roughly 100-page booklet that accompanied the Japanese editions is reproduced, apart from certain sections (artist profiles and the like).
