Newly restored from the original British analogue master tapes.\n\nOn 17 October 1972 Wyn Morris and the New Philharmonia Orchestra gave the premiere of Cooke's third version (first edition); the following year they recorded it for Philips, and the album appeared that same year as a two-LP set, the first recording of the third version anywhere in the world. Until then there had been little more than Ormandy's early recording of Cooke's second version, and although the worldwide Mahler boom was still just around the corner, the new third version attracted attention from every quarter and Wyn Morris found himself suddenly in the spotlight.\n\nThe third version was published in 1976, the year of Cooke's own death, and the Morris recording remained the only one available until Kurt Sanderling recorded the work in 1979. Other recordings followed, including Levine's and Rattle's first version, but recognition of the Tenth was slow in coming. It was only after 1989, when Berthold Goldschmidt and the Matthews brothers, carrying on Cooke's work, published a revised third version (second edition), that recordings such as Harding's with the Vienna Philharmonic for DG and Rattle's second version with the Berlin Philharmonic appeared and the piece finally gained wider acceptance as part of the Mahler canon (the Harding was DG's first recording of the complete work).\n\nDespite marking a genuine turning point in both performance and recording history, the Morris set was never reissued on CD by Philips and fell into obscurity; imported licensed editions appeared on other labels, but it has never received the recognition it deserves. As an important document of the evolution of the Cooke performing version, it is at last given a properly authorised release. The performance, running to over 84 minutes, is accommodated on a single disc. For this reissue the original British analogue master tapes were newly transferred at high bit rate and high sampling frequency (192kHz\/24bit). A newly written introductory essay by Ryosuke Masuda is included, and the original sleeve design is used.
