A performance of real substance in outstanding sound.\n\nHaitink had already recorded the \"Titan\" in 1962, so this disc represents a remake made roughly a decade later. In 1962 he had only recently been appointed chief conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, in the previous year, and although he had already made several recordings for Philips, the \"Titan\" was a stand-alone project predating the complete cycle; its sleeve accordingly differed from the uniform design adopted from the 1966 recording of the Third onwards, which became the first instalment of the cycle proper.\n\nThe present recording was evidently made in 1972 as part of the complete cycle, after all the symphonies (excluding Das Lied von der Erde) had been recorded, including the Adagio from the Tenth, and its sleeve follows the series design. Quite why Haitink chose to record the work again is unclear, but as with his Concertgebouw remakes of Bruckner's Symphonies Nos. 7-9 and his digital-era accounts of Mahler's Fourth and Seventh, the second version is on a markedly grander scale. It is good enough to make one wish he had rerecorded the other symphonies too, and coming at a point when Philips analogue recording was approaching perfection, it shows a deepening that goes well beyond mere quality of execution. Haitink later recorded the work with the Berlin Philharmonic, but in terms of balance this disc arguably comes closest to the approach he was aiming for.\n\nRecent complete-cycle import boxes with Blu-ray Audio and new remasterings used the earlier recording for the CDs, making this remake all the more deserving of a new CD edition of its own. For this reissue the original Dutch analogue master tapes were newly transferred at higher specification than that box, at high bit rate and high sampling frequency (192kHz\/24bit). A newly written introductory essay by Takehiro Yamano is included, and the original sleeve design is used.
