The famous Gayaneh exists in many recordings, but none surpasses this one led by Khachaturian himself. That the Vienna Philharmonic, rooted in the Austro-German tradition, should record music by a living Soviet composer was quite sensational at the time. Add Decca's excellent engineering of the period, faithfully capturing this strongly folk-inflected music, and these performances take on the status of historical documents.\nSymphony No. 2 was completed in 1943 and stands alongside Gayaneh, Spartacus and the violin and piano concertos among Khachaturian's principal works. Written during the Second World War, it is a large-scale score in which one can glimpse an anti-war undercurrent akin to Shostakovich's Symphonies Nos. 7 and 8 or Honegger's Second and Third from the same years; it received a Stalin Prize in 1946. This heavyweight work is a classic recording that only Decca could have made, and the Vienna Philharmonic's almost visceral responsiveness is irreplaceable. A magnificent performance that deserves to be heard at least once.\nFor this CD the original master tapes held in the home country were traced and newly digitised at 192kHz\/24bit, with the remastered result used as the CD master. The coupling is Einem's Philadelphia Symphony conducted by Zubin Mehta, recorded in 1968 - his third Decca recording with the Vienna Philharmonic, and unusual repertoire for both parties at the time. Completed in 1960 and premiered the following year by Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, it has not appeared on CD for many years. Mehta's superb control makes for a fine performance. The cover uses the original LP jacket design, and the booklet also reproduces some alternative jacket designs in colour. A newly written introductory essay is included.
