The cast featured an all-star lineup: Masaaki Sakai as Sun Wukong, Masako Natsume as Tripitaka, Shiro Kishibe (then; now Shiro Kishibe) as Sha Wujing, and Toshiyuki Nishida as Zhu Bajie. The fact that Masako Natsume played the role of Tripitaka—a character originally male—also generated significant buzz.
