The Cockpit" was serialized intermittently in Weekly Shōnen Sunday (published by Shogakukan) from 1973, and was initially known as the Battlefield manga series. It is highly regarded as one of Leiji Matsumoto's masterpieces, along with such epic science fiction works as "Space Battleship Yamato" and "The Galaxy Express 999," and can be considered one of his lifeworks. The three carefully selected episodes from the original 62-episode series, each adapted into an OVA by the geniuses of the animation world, depict the coexistence of warm machines and humans who clumsily tried to live pure lives at a time when war had not yet become dependent on machines, while at the same time highlighting the tragic nature of war. Vol. 1 is directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, known for his profound and aesthetic screen works such as "Yozu Toshi" (1987) and "Vampire Hunter D" (2000), and you can fully enjoy the charm of this unique combination of the world of Leiji Matsumoto and Vol. 2, "Mobile Suit Gundam 0083 STARDUST MEMORY" (1991), tackles head-on the unforgettable tragedy of suicide attacks for the Japanese people.The director of "Armored Trooper Votoms" (1983), Takahashi Ryosuke, is invited to direct Vol. 3, which presents a well-developed human drama between a former motorcycle racer and a young cavalryman with solid details.
