In addition to “Japanese Rhapsody” and “Symphonic Ballad,” recorded in 1961 as part of the “Japanese Contemporary Composers Series,” this release features a live concert recording of the premiere of the revised “Salome”—the version to which Akira Ifukube himself added new material based on the 1948 edition.\nThe two pieces on this album, “Japanese Rhapsody” and “Symphonic Tale,” were the first recordings of these works made by Kazuo Yamada anywhere in the world (though there was an earlier 1943 SP recording of “Symphonic Tale” alone). These recordings, which are truly considered the definitive versions of these pieces, have been remastered for this release using the original analog masters.\nAlso included here is the 1987 version of “Salome,” based on the original work by Oscar Wilde, which was performed at the Shinsei Nihon Symphony Orchestra’s 100th regular concert in 1987. Originally premiered in 1948 for a ballet company as a two-act work for a two-pipe orchestra, it was first transcribed for piano and then rewritten for a three-pipe orchestra. The premiere recording of this work—Iwamoto’s largest in scale—had been out of print since its release in 1987, but we are reissuing this long-lost recording ahead of the 100th anniversary of his birth in 2014.
