The playful humor of “Anger Over Lost Pennies” is brought to life with vibrancy, yet never at the expense of dignity. Even “Für Elise”—a piece that has been played and heard far too often—is rendered by Kemp in such a way that the very first note evokes a sense of poignancy and tranquility, as if inviting the listener into another world. Meanwhile, in the “Variations,” he expresses the kaleidoscopically shifting musical ideas that Beethoven presented with such delight—through a rich variety of timbres, variations in touch between firm and soft, stylish rhythms, and exquisite pauses—that the listener cannot help but smile. This is a magnificent performance in which Beethoven’s ever-changing compositional style resonates with the rich expressiveness of the veteran pianist Kemp.
