This reissue brings together all of his stereo recordings for Deutsche Grammophon, from Nos. 23 and 24, taped in 1960, through to Nos. 21 and 22 from 1977, made close to the end of his career. He had also recorded for DG during the mono era, and in 1953 set down Nos. 9 and 15 for Decca with Karl Munchinger conducting.\n\nKempff's Mozart never sounds formulaic; even on a first hearing it comes across as richly expressive and profoundly humane. At a time when scholarly, text-driven readings are increasingly the norm, his playing asks us to consider something that modern performance has largely lost. It is many years now since audiences could hear Kempff live, yet he remains one of the best-loved of all pianists - and one measure of his stature is that these performances simply do not date.\n\nThe two concertos recorded in 1977 are particularly valuable as documents of Kempff's late years. Musically they are extraordinarily fulfilled for a pianist past eighty, yet they attracted relatively little attention on release. By the 1970s the Mozart recordings of Brendel, Haebler and others commanded overwhelming support, and critical opinion never quite settled around new discs from the ageing Kempff. Heard today, however, they allow us to appreciate the sensibility of a great musician in a way that was not really possible at the time.\n\nFor this reissue the original jacket artwork has been used throughout. Sonically, the source masters have been transferred from the original tapes at high bit rate and high sampling frequency (192kHz\/24bit) for use as the CD master, giving greater resolution and a smoother, more finely graded tone. The booklet includes a newly written introductory essay. A release worthy of Kempff's 120th anniversary, and one to keep.
