A legendary masterpiece that has reigned supreme since the early days of stereo!\n\nIn 1951, Knappertsbusch made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival—the first since the end of the war—and that same year conducted *Parsifal* (released as PROC1661) and “The Ring of the Nibelung,” and “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.” Those performances became legendary, and from then on—with the exception of 1953—he conducted at Bayreuth every year until 1964, the year before his death. While many of these performances are available today, this 1962 *Parsifal* is the only one recorded in stereo; during the LP era, it was regarded as the definitive performance of *Parsifal*; and even in the CD era, when people spoke of Kuna’s complete opera recordings, *Parsifal* was the first to come to mind—thus reigning as a classic for nearly half a century. As one of the last of the great Wagnerian conductors who defined an era, Knaepertsbusch was a conductor who carried on the traditions of the Bayreuth Festival’s early days. As you know, he led the finest singers of his time and left a great legacy in the history of Bayreuth.\nThis recording, which can be called “supreme” in many respects—including the cast and the expressiveness and intensity inherent in Knaepertsbusch’s conducting in his later years—may sometimes be praised solely for its sound quality by those who particularly value the 1951 version; however, it is a masterful performance in which Knaepertsbusch’s distinctive style shines through at every turn. The Philips recording, which also captures the unique acoustics of the Bayreuth festival venue, offers the finest “Parsifal” available even by today’s standards. For this reissue, taking into account the previous release of a high-fidelity remastered version at 96 kHz, 24-bit, we have used a CD master sourced directly from the analog master, offering an even finer-grained 192 kHz, 24-bit audio source. The cover features the original design from the initial release. Notably, this cover had not been used since the original release. Since it was not used for the CD reissue either, this marks its first appearance since the original release. As with the 1951 live recording of “Parsifal” (PROC1661) released in Vol. 1, the booklet features a new introductory essay by Atsuya Funaki.
