Reissued for the first time in years!\nThe year 2013 marked the end of an era for the legendary musicians who supported the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s “golden age”—the era of Solti’s leadership. On April 13, Harses passed away at the age of 91, and Crevenjer—who had announced in February that he would retire at the end of that season—also left the Chicago Symphony Orchestra following a concert in June. It goes without saying that the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has consistently ranked near the very top not only in the United States but worldwide, and that its golden age was built over a long period thanks to the support of principal players who were, in many ways, “extraordinary.” Listeners, in particular, likely feel this most strongly when it comes to the brass section, led by Harses.\nHowever, with very few exceptions, they left behind almost no solo concerto recordings (excluding the woodwinds and Crevenger). While this may have been natural for orchestral musicians, the only recordings available today are, of course, orchestral works and chamber music. Fortunately, however, DG’s decision to produce this album—though it’s a shame it’s only a single-track release—is truly remarkable. While it’s not hard to imagine that these recordings were squeezed in between sessions for various orchestral recordings at the time, the performances that have been preserved are absolute gems. In particular, Harses’s Haydn performance has become synonymous with the trumpet concerto, and I am deeply grateful that it was preserved. Note that while the original album contained only tracks 1–4, this release also includes Jacobs’s Tuba Concerto, recorded in 1977. Vaughan Williams’ work is also a famous tuba concerto, and alongside the recording by J. Fletcher—who was active with the PJBE—this is one of the definitive recordings of the piece (truly the top performers from East and West).
