On the DECCA label, alongside this “New World,” there is a recording of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto featuring Kyung-Wha Chung as soloist, as well as a 1963 recording by the Moscow Philharmonic in London (Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with Ashkenazy and Mozart’s “Concerto-Symphony” with the Oistrakh family), and a recording of Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1, made on January 30, 1981, with the LPO and B. Berkin as accompanist (note that due to Kondrashin’s sudden death, the Second Concerto was recorded in 1982 under the baton of Barshai). This recording, which generated considerable buzz at the time of its release as Kondrashin’s debut with the VPO, was meticulously recorded over a three-day session and features a performance brimming with tension thanks to Kondrashin’s dynamic conducting. This rich sense of tempo, which draws the listener deeper and deeper into the music, is a rare performance that delivers a depth, exhilaration, and sense of satisfaction rivaling that of the Philips recording of *Scheherazade*. It stands out even among the many world-famous recordings of “From the New World” and is a timeless masterpiece that will captivate listeners, even those who aren’t Kondrashin fans. This reissue pairs the recording with the “Piano Concerto,” also recorded with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in 1986. It’s a lengthy release. This is another valuable recording that had been out of print for some time.
