In fact, these two pieces—“La Mer” and “Nocturnes”—mark his debut recordings for a major label, making them truly historic performances. It is also surprising that she conducted the Concertgebouw Orchestra right from the start (anecdotes from this first recording session are described in the booklet of the collaborative release with Nippon Columbia, “Mahler: Symphony No. 9” (TWCO33), which we released in December 2012). For some reason, he never re-recorded “The Sea” or “Nocturne” afterward, making this performance the only existing recording. It is a precious recording from 1969, when he was just 33 years old (he later recorded with the same orchestra in 1972, accompanied by Hebler; this was released as PROC1222 in September 2012).\nFurthermore, recordings featuring Furtwängler and the Concertgebouw Orchestra—whose 100th birthday was celebrated in 2013—are rare; perhaps because of his deep ties to the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic and the Rotterdam Philharmonic, this performance is an exceptionally valuable recording. Although this recording dates from 1959, when he was still relatively young at 46 (originally paired with these two pieces along with Borodin’s “Central Asian Odes” and Mussorgsky’s “A Night on the Bare Mountain”), what we hear here is, in a sense, a passionate performance that the later Fournet did not possess.
