His versatile expressiveness was perfectly suited to the music of Berlioz—another Frenchman who was strongly influenced by Beethoven and produced innovative works. In fact, Montou made five studio recordings of Berlioz’s *Symphonie fantastique*. The last of these—recorded five months before his death—is a concert hall recording in which he conducted the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra.\nIn his fourth recording with the prestigious Vienna Philharmonic (reissued on 9\/3 as PROC1578), Montu skillfully incorporated the musicians’ exceptional musicality into his own interpretation; when faced with the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra—which, typical of a broadcast orchestra, possesses a neutral character and excels in discipline and functionality—he delivers an even more direct and dynamic performance. While the captivating attention to detail and sense of color found in the Vienna Philharmonic recording take a back seat here, one can sense an overwhelming energy born of a sense of speed and tight ensemble playing—so much so that it feels as if he has been rejuvenated—as well as a sincerity dedicated to striving for the highest artistic ideals. If the Vienna Philharmonic’s recording is programmic and worldly in its expression, this North German Radio Symphony Orchestra recording can be described as absolute music and spiritual in its expression. This depth of musical interpretation was highly praised by French critics and musicologists of the time, likely leading to the orchestra’s receipt of two major disc awards in 1965: the ACC (Académie Charles Cros) and the ADF (Académie du Disque Français).\nFor this reissue, a new CD master has been created from the analog master in the Nippon Columbia archive. It has been meticulously digitized (192 kHz\/24-bit) from the analog master tape and carefully remastered before release.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"COLUMBIA X TOWER RECORDS\/The Valued Collection","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53595619066145,"sku":"4988001763536","price":1257.0,"currency_code":"JPY","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/4988001763536.jpg?v=1790481957","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/products\/4988001763536","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
