The period ensemble Illyria Consort was formed by Čičić to explore little-known music from the 17th and 18th centuries.\nThe new depths of early music pioneered by Čičić and the Illyria Consort are revealed in the violin works of Johann Jakob Walter (1650–1717), who is considered one of the most important violinists in pre-Bach Germany, alongside Biber and Westhoff. J.J. Walter served as a violinist in the orchestra of Cosimo III de’ Medici in Florence and as concertmaster at the Dresden court. His *Scherzi da Violino* (a collection of scherzos for solo violin and basso continuo), published in 1676, includes passages that anticipate Paganini’s techniques—such as imitating a harp with pizzicato and a nightingale’s song with the bow— some of which anticipated Paganini’s techniques. The album features a diverse selection of works, including the polyphonic possibilities in the Sonata in D major (No. 3), the playfulness toward the end of No. 4, the ingenuity of “Imitation del cuccu,” and the dramatic melancholy of the final aria—a favorite of Bojan Čičić—this collection offers a rich variety of works.
