In the latest release of the “GlossaSCBSeries,” a collaboration between Glossa and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the “Viennese-style double bass”—used in Vienna during the Classical period—takes center stage. At the dawn of the Viennese Classical period, there were several outstanding double bassists in Vienna and Bratislava, and the most important solo works for this instrument were composed. Mastering this unique instrument—which features frets on all five strings—is Canadian double bassist David Sinclair, who serves as a lecturer on historical double bass at the SCB and is one of the world’s few experts on the Viennese-style double bass. Furthermore, the accompanying early music ensemble features young performers active at the forefront of early music performance—including Laila Shaiek, Christophe Kowen, Suzuko Yoshida, Jonathan Pešek, and Giorgio Paronuzzi—all of whom are young musicians active at the forefront of early music performance (and all SCB teachers or former students).
