Tcherepnin - Import CD","description":"\u003cp\u003eCredits:\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAlexander Gadjiev\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDescription:\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA new release from Alexander Gadjiev: miniatures by Prokofiev and the two Tcherepnins\n\nAlexander Gadjiev, the pianist whose career took off after winning Second Prize and the Sonata Prize at the 2021 Chopin Competition.\nHis latest album offers a strikingly ambitious programme pairing the piano music of Prokofiev with that of father and son Tcherepnin.\n\nItalian-Slovenian by background, Alexander Gadjiev has built a devoted following in Japan ever since taking First Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2015 Hamamatsu International Piano Competition. He went on to win the World Piano Masters in Monte Carlo in 2018 and the Sydney International Piano Competition in 2021, and at the 18th International Chopin Piano Competition in 2021 he took a commanding Second Prize together with the prize for the best sonata performance (the Krystian Zimerman Prize).\n\nGadjiev, who was also selected as a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist for 2019-2022, now releases this new album on the German label CAvi-music, recorded as a co-production between BBC Radio 3 and Deutschlandradio Kultur, the cultural network of German public radio.\n\nProkofiev's sets of piano miniatures Sarcasms and Visions fugitives are coupled with piano pieces by Prokofiev's teacher Nikolai Tcherepnin (1873-1945) and by his son Alexander Tcherepnin (1899-1977). Alexander Tcherepnin was born and trained in Russia before emigrating via Georgia to Paris, where he moved in the circles of Ravel and Les Six; he travelled widely in Asia, including Japan and China (his work as a teacher in Japan left a lasting mark, and his wife was Chinese), and after the war he settled in the United States and pursued an international career. Three cycles spanning his early to late periods are represented here (one of them in excerpts), drawing on East Asian culture, French colour, Gregorian chant, Georgian folk music and much else besides. Prokofiev wrote in his diary that he had learned more about the orchestra from Tcherepnin than from Rimsky-Korsakov; Nikolai Tcherepnin taught conducting at the St Petersburg Conservatory and was a conductor for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.
