In 1967, Yun was abducted by South Korean intelligence agents in West Berlin and taken to Seoul, where he was sentenced to life imprisonment for being a North Korean spy. Although his sentence was reduced on appeal, he was ultimately released in 1969 thanks to a petition signed by prominent cultural figures from around the world and the support of the German Foreign Ministry. He subsequently acquired German citizenship and spent the rest of his life in Germany. The nightmares, fear, and torture he endured during his years in prison naturally influenced Yun’s work, and traces of this experience can be seen in one of his most beautiful and moving pieces, the *Cello Concerto*. On the other hand, in *Nore* (meaning “song”), composed in 1964, one can find, amidst its beauty, an intense lyricism reminiscent of Debussy’s Cello Sonata.\n\nIn an interview, he spoke about the finale of the Cello Concerto as follows:\n“Consider the octave leap toward the end. This leap signifies freedom, purity, and the need and desire for the absolute. In the orchestra, the oboe glissandos from G-sharp to A, and the trumpet takes over that A; for me, this range has always held a divine allure. (...) The cello tries to reach A but cannot. It manages to reach a quarter-tone above G-sharp via a glissando, but it cannot go any higher. It gives up.
